DAY 2 :

After breakfast we travel to Chefchaouen. It is a magical town, dreamlike and as if pulled from the pages of a thousand and one nights, a beautiful blue and white-washed Andalusian town nestled in the Rif Mountains. The town is relaxed with small winding alleyways and market squares where the women of the surrounding Rif come to sell their handmade crafts. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel or Riad in Chefchaouen.

DAY 3 :

Travel to Fes the second largest city of Morocco, Fes was the capital of Morocco until 1925. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is believed to be the largest pedestrian area in the world. The city has two old Medinas.  Fes has the oldest continuously functioning Madrasa (school) in the world, founded in AD859. The city has been called the “Mecca of the West” and the “Athens of Africa”.

You will tour the medina with its souks (markets) and winding streets. We will stop at the gateway of the Royal Palace to see the large golden gates and lush gardens. We will also visit the 9th-century Karaouiyine Mosque and University which is thought to be the first university ever built. You will also visit the tomb of the city founder, MoulayIdris II. We will have lunch at one of the traditional restaurants in the old medina. After lunch you will continue to explore the old city, seeing sights such as the Najarine Fountain, the gateway of Bab Boujloud, the old harem gardens and the Batha Museum. On the way back to the hotel we will stop to enjoy a panoramic view of the city and stop at a famous tannery to learn how and where the skins are cured and dyed in enormous vats.

DAY 4 :

We will depart from Fes on our way to Meknes, we will first take an excursion to nearby Volubilis, which is  perched on the top of a hill with amazing views of the countryside, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed for being “an exceptionally well preserved example of a large Roman colonial town on the fringes of the Empire”, walk amongst Roman ruins, see the beautiful floor mosaics.

Visit Moulay Idriss and the burial place of the founder of Morocco’s first imperial dynasty. For some Moroccans it is a place of pilgrimage with a large tomb and nearby mosque. Continue to Meknes, the smallest and friendliest of the five imperial cities of Morocco. The old part of Meknes is beautiful and has a feel of the oriental and the Mediterranean at the same time. The immense city walls and gates lead the visitors’ imagination into times long gone. The labyrinth of alleyways and market stands are a joy to any visitor and the friendly inhabitants will gladly show you the products they are selling, like spices, olives, pottery, copper ware or carpets.

DAY 5 :

Experience the Sun rise in the Sahara Desert! Enjoy a typical Saharan breakfast, then the camel ride back to your hotel for a shower and breakfast. We will take lunch before Continuing on to the Djemaa el Fna square, the beating heart of the city famous for its souks. The souks offer an incredible shopping experience with a myriad of narrow winding streets that lead through a series of smaller markets clustered by trade

After lunch we will depart to Essaouira. The journey to this former Portuguese fishing village offers up only a few roadside towns and the occasional Berber village. Jimi Hendrix made the pilgrimage, as did Bob Marley and Cat Stevens. Also the inspiration for Hendrix’s song “Castles Made of Sand”. Essaouira, known also as Mogador is famous for its annual festival of “Gnaoua music”. Some of the highlights that you will visit are The Skala, the harbour, the ramparts and the Jewish district called “Derb Lealouj” rebuilt by the Alaouite sultan Mohamed Ben Abdulah in the 18th century. Situated on the Atlantic coast, it has a steady year round temperature in the 20’s, with an expansive golden beach popular with windsurfers and famous for its fresh seafood grills, Thuja wood crafts and artists colony. Old Portuguese ramparts guard the walled city where you can watch silver craftsmen and wood carvers at work in one of the most charming medinas in all of Morocco. Visit a traditional pharmacy and learn about natural medicines and cures, and a women’s cooperative where argan nuts are processed by hand into one of the rarest and most versatile oils in the world.
