5 Day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes Itinerary

Day 1Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate

Our 5-day trip from Marrakech to Fes starts with a pick-up at the hotel or riad. We will head towards the High Atlas, this mountain range has the highest altitudes around North Africa with 4,167 m. Furthermore, we will stop at Tizi N’Tichka pass higher than 2260 high.

After that, we will visit Kasbah Telouet, a beautiful fall building of the Thami El Glaoui family. We will then continue to the fortified village of Ait Benhaddou, which was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1987. Here, various famous movies have been made, such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and The Mummy.

Lastly, we will arrive in Ouarzazatewhere the Moroccan cinema studios are. You will have dinner and spend the night there.

Day 2Ouarzazate – Skoura- Rose Valley – Dades Valley

After breakfast, we will spend the morning visiting the film studios, where many films are taxed, such as “The Wars,” “The Mummy,” “Gladiator,”…etc. Later, we will depart for the Kasbah of Taourirt, a World Heritage Site.

Then, we will continue down the road of Thousand Kasbash through the splendid palm trees of Skoura, accompanied by hundreds of Kasbash that we will see along the way. Let’s enter the Dades Gorges, and we will admire the hundreds of kasbahs dotted along the route. We may stop at the 17th-century Amridil Kasbah for a photo.

We will continue on the river road, entering the Rose Valley. We will make a stop at the impressive formation often referred to as the monkey fingers. Here, you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 3Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast, we will depart through Todra Gorges to the vast palm grove of Tineghir, where agriculture stands out—date palms, crafts… etc. Later, we will arrive at the Todgha Gorges. Here, we can see the stunning landscape that has been forged for thousands of years thanks to the river that crosses it.

Then we will drive to the Merzouga desert, where you will be welcomed with a cup of mint tea and relax for a while. However, the best journey starts by riding the camels in the middle of the Sahara desert to watch and take great shots of the magical sunset. We will arrive at the camp to wander around and have dinner at the Berber desert camp/ luxury camp; later, you will hear the drums and Berber songs echoing in the desert night and lie down in the tent.

Day 4 Sightseeing of Merzouga desert – Nomad Families – Khamlia

The fourth day of our 5 days desert tour from Marrakech to Fes will be a day trip to discover the Moroccan desert. In the early morning at your luxury camp, we will wake up early to watch the sunrise. After breakfast and shower, we will start exploring the desert region by visiting nomadic families still living at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes and sharing the secrets of their lifestyle.

Our desert excursion will continue to the Mascara mine of M’FIS, located in the Low Atlas Mountains, followed by a beautiful panoramic view of the dunes. We will then drive to Khamlia village to listen to other Moroccan songs, initially from Sudan and Mali. Lunch will be in the same town, where traditional Berber pizza is served.

After lunch, we left to see Hassi Labied’s oasis in the desert and transferred to the Hotel next to the Hotel. You will have a Free afternoon on your own at the Hotel to relax, and at sunset, you can wander around and have a delicious dinner and breakfast there.

5 day Marrakech to Fes FAQ

desert tours from Marrakech

What do we actually do out in the dunes during the "Full Desert Day"?

Travelers often worry they will just be sitting around the sand bored. Your dedicated desert day is highly active: you will go off-roading in a 4×4 to visit authentic nomadic families living behind the dunes, listen to traditional live Gnawa music in Khamlia village, and try sandboarding down the Erg Chebbi slopes before your evening camel ride.

What is the weather transition like between Marrakech, the Sahara, and Fes?

You will experience three completely different climates. Marrakech is typically hot and dry; the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert experience extreme temperature swings (scorching days and freezing desert nights); and as you cross the Middle Atlas toward Ifrane (known as the “Switzerland of Morocco”) and Fes, the weather becomes much cooler, greener, and crisper. Packing easily removable layers is a must.

We spend two nights in the desert area—do we stay in the sand dunes the whole time?

To give you the best experience, the two nights are completely different. One night is spent in a traditional hotel or Kasbah lodge right at the foot of the dunes, where you can swim in a pool overlooking the sand and sleep in a standard room. The other night is spent deep inside the dunes at the nomadic-style desert camp, which you reach by camel or 4×4.

Will we have enough time to enjoy the desert, or is most of the tour spent driving?

The journey includes some long driving days, but the route is planned with regular stops for sightseeing, photography and local experiences. You will have a full afternoon in the Merzouga area, including the camel ride and sunset, followed by a night at the desert camp.

Can the tour be customized for a family with young children?

Yes. A private tour gives families more flexibility. We can adapt the daily schedule, choose family-friendly accommodation, add extra breaks and adjust activities according to the children’s ages and your family’s needs.
